What Pool Shape and Size is Right for You?
Everybody wants to be in a pool around this time of year, especially a pool of their very own in their own backyard. While every pool gives you the opportunity for refreshing fun and leisure with family and friends, there are many shapes and sizes of pools to choose from to best fit your backyard, house, landscaping, and lifestyle. Before you choose your ideal pool design and shape, here are the typical pool styles to choose from:
Lap Pool
Lap pools are swimming pools build and used for fitness and health. These types of pools are usually long and narrow (about 50 feet in length) and are a rectangular shape.
Geometric
Geometric pools have very straight lines and contemporary features. They are usually traditional looking with even lines and consistent radius. These pools are perfect if you want a more formal, upscale look.
Free Form
Free form pools are lagoon style pools you’ll see at some tropical resort hotels. They have a naturalistic shape, have waterfall or rock features, and mimic an oasis.
Cocktail Pool
Cocktail pools are smaller than traditional sized pools that are prefect for small backyards. These types of pools are perfect for a quick swim and by adding a heater can be transformed into a spa (spool) in cooler weather.
Factors to consider when choosing a pool shape:
Available Space
If you have a rectangular backyard and you aren’t planning to add very much foliage of additional decking, a geometric pool might suit you. If you can only accommodate a smaller space for custom backyard pool, a cocktail pool would be perfect.
Budget
A bigger pool will cost more, while a smaller pool will mean less spending for materials and labor. Keep in mind that you’ll need to allocate enough in your budget not just for the construction of your pool, but the additional costs needed for rock and water features, and pool maintenance costs.
Enjoyment
Will your new pool be for the entire family? Shallower water or even an addition of a kiddy pool could be for a young family, while a rectangular pool for an active swimmer would be perfect for exercise. If relaxation is in the cards, the addition of a spa could be for you.
Landscaping
Landscaping helps pull together your backyard and create a warm and inviting space for your family and guests. Whether you decide to place landscaping in first or the new pool, be sure that both backyard components jive together well.
Pool and Outdoor Features
There are a variety of pool features that can be added to your new pool to add a personal touch. Fountains, ponds, waterfalls, waterslides, pool ladders, outdoor furniture, decking and many other features pull together the look of your pool, but will require extra space.
It may be a bit challenging to determine the right pool shape and design for your backyard space since there are so many factors to keep in mind. However, you can always contact pool design experts in your area that can make recommendations for what would look best in your backyard.
