Three Reminders for the First Swim of the Season in Your Houston Pool
The cold and dark of the winter have just fled, and you’ve pulled the cover off of your pool. You’re probably ready to pull on your suit and dive in, but before you do, make sure you take care of these three things first.
1. Get Your Pool in Tip-Top Shape
One of the most important things you should do before the first swim of the season is make sure that your pool is actually ready for swimmers. This means removing the cover, scrubbing away any algae or dirt, clearing out any leaves or debris, and getting your filters cleaned and your pool pump operational. This is only half of the pre-season prep for your pool, though.
Before anyone jumps in the pool, you will want to have a professional test the water. They will test the mineral content of the water, as well as pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels, and will help you select the right chemicals to get your pool water balanced. Pools and spas that have not been properly treated with chemicals can become a breeding ground for bacteria or other organisms that can cause rashes or be harmful if swallowed by swimmers.
2. Make Sure Everyone Knows the Pool Rules
If it’s been a few months since they last went swimming, your family members may not remember the pool rules. Each household has their own system for determining who does routine maintenance and who picks up pool toys and beach towels, so a refresher is a good idea. It’s also important to assess how strong each family member’s swimming skills are and to be upfront about whether people can swim alone, if adults need to be on hand when friends are over to swim, and so on.
3. Don’t Forget to Tend to Swimmers’ Bodies
The pool water is sparkling in invitation. Everyone is squared away about proper pool safety and behavior. But don’t forget that your bodies also need to transition from winter mode to summer mode. Especially early in the season, you’ll want to pay special attention to sunscreen, covering up or going inside during peak sun hours to prevent sunburns and skin damage. Keep aloe vera and moisturizing lotion on hand to help your skin adjust to sun and chlorine exposure. There are special shampoos and conditioners, as well as swimsuit detergents, to prevent the pool water from causing damage, too. And as you increase your activity level in your pool, be sure you drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and take the time to gently stretch muscles that have not been used over the winter.
