How to Increase the Life of Your Pool Plaster
No homeowner loves to hear the word repair, and that certainly goes for pool plaster repair, as well. Pool repairs of any kind are not only costly, but they can stand in the way of you fully enjoying your backyard oasis. In order to keep your plaster in the best shape for as long as possible, we recommend the following:
Performing Regular Pool Maintenance
A large part of regular pool maintenance is ensuring that your chemical levels stay balanced. As long as this is being done on a regular basis, you’ll substantially increase the life of your plaster and be able to avoid any pool plaster repairs in the near future.
- The best pool pH typically ranges between 7.4 to 7.6 (a low pH level will create acidic pool water which will cause etching and destroy the appearance of your plaster)
- Alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm
- Calcium hardness should stay between 200 and 400 ppm (a calcium hardness that is too low will result in soft water, which will slowly eat away at your plaster, while calcium hardness that’s too high will cause water stains)
Fixing Your Plaster ASAP
Even the smallest of cracks shouldn’t be ignored and a pool plaster repair job should be done. But here’s the good news: Unlike expensive pool liner replacements for vinyl-liner pools or resurfacing for gunite and fiberglass pools, if a homeowner catches an etch or crack soon enough, he or she may be able to perform the pool plaster repair with a DIY patch kit. A pool service company will be able to direct you to the most appropriate kit for your pool, or they’ll even do the small repair job for you.
As a reminder, pool plaster repairs can be done at any time, but unless you perform regular and proper pool maintenance, the problem is bound to return a lot sooner than you think. During the winter months, remember to still regularly check the chemical balance of your pool at least once a week to keep the water clean and healthy.
