How to Clean Your Pool After a Rainstorm in Houston

Rain and thunderstorms are due to happen during the summer months when cooler fronts collides with the heat from the south. Learning how to clean a pool properly after one hits, however, is essential in maintaining proper pool water chemistry and keeping your pool waters happy and healthy after the event. To minimize any potential issues such as cloudy water, algae or filter pressure overload, here’s what you can do to keep your pool water chemistry balanced:

Skim and Brush Your Pool

A major problem that comes with these sudden storms is larger debris clogging up your filtration system. By skimming and brushing your pool, you’re removing this damaging debris while also stirring up all of the excess dirt that’s entered your pool, which makes it easier for you system to filter out on its own.

Clean Your Baskets

This includes any skimmer baskets as well as all filter baskets in your pool system. This will keep a steady flow of water moving through your system and keeping your pool water clean.

Consider shocking Your Pool

If after checking your pool water chemistry you notice it’s a bit off, then it may be worth considering shocking your waters. This will help sanitize any contaminants that may have entered the pool due to the rainstorm.

TIP:  After shocking your pool, check your filter’s PSI.  If it’s anywhere from 8 to 10 PSI higher than it normally is, take a few minutes and clean out the filter.

Keep Your System Running

Our final tip for how to clean a pool after a rainstorm is to keep your pump and filter running. Your circulation systems should be operating for a minimum of 12 hours after a rainstorm to ensure that all of the dirty and debris has been filtered out of your pool, as well as ensure that the chlorine has been sufficiently circulated to maintain pool water chemistry.
