Houston Pool Design Trends Series – Incorporating Rock into the Poolscape
There are two types of rock you can bring into your backyard poolscape — natural boulders and artificial rock. Incorporating rock work into the backyard creates a three dimensional look to the pool, adding an adventurous feel to the pool.
Natural boulders are incorporated in the pool in a variety of ways. They can be placed on and around the deck on the outside of the pool or they can be placed (carefully) inside the pool to create a sunning ledge or place to relax outside the water. Often times, designers also integrate a water feature into the rock work, creating a waterfall that emulates something you’d see in a tropical location.
The tricky part of natural rock is getting it to the location. Boulders can weigh in the tons and require a lot of special equipment and strategic planning to be included in the design.
Artificial rock often times looks so real that it’s hard to decipher between the two. However, it is manufactured in a factory and brought on site where it is assembled and installed. Faux rock designers take great lengths to make sure their rock work looks real — many travel to quarries and tropical locations to cast the real rock in order to make molds in the factory. Once molded, they paint it exactly like the real rock, creating a piece that could be unnoticeable to the lay person.
