6 Tips for National Water Safety Month From Elite Pools of Houston

With summer right around the corner, no time is better than in the month of May to be America’s National Water Safety Month.  During this month, pool owners and water lovers should put a concentrated focus on teaching and reminding ourselves and others on how to behave responsibly in the water for the safety of everyone.   You can kick start your list with our 6 water safety tips for how to stay safe around your pool and outdoor living space this spring and summer, starting with:

6 Tips for National Water Safety Month | Elite Pools of Houston

1. Install a Fence

Every pool should have a five-foot high fence surrounding it along with a self closing and self latching gate. If you currently have one, do a walk around to make sure that it isn’t in any need of repair.

2. Install Alarms

If you already have a fence, consider installing an alarm. There are a number of alarms that will alert you to not only when gates are opened, but when anything or anyone may be in the pool area (such as a pet).

3. Designate a Watcher

Whenever anyone’s in the pool, regardless of their age, someone should be designated as the “water” to monitor children, teens, and even adults in the pool.  Better yet, assign children “water buddies” so they can always keep an eye on one friend to make sure that they’re staying safe near the pool.

4. Put Down the Phone

Having a mobile phone by the pool is handy in case of emergency, but parents and guardians should have a “hands off” policy when it comes to their phones if they’re the assigned water or water guardian.  Just a quick glance away can result in a tragic accident!

5. Restock your First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should be poolside at all times.  Open it up and make sure that you have enough supplies in the event that someone does become injured.

6. Check The Pool First for Missing People

Our last of the water safety tips for National Water Safety Month may be the most important of all.  If anyone should ever go missing from sight the first place to look is the pool.  Every second counts should anyone be under water, so this is the first place which parents, guardians, and “water buddies” should be advised to look.
